Oxides

Aluminium Oxide

Aluminium oxide, Al2O3, is used for widely varying applications and is probably the most important oxide ceramic. The ceramic’s properties include good mechanical strength, good corrosion and wear resistance, good heat conductivity and excellent electric insulation. Aluminum oxide is for example used in abrasive and insulation applications. It is also an economically attractive material due to it's low cost.

Zirconium Oxide

Zirconium oxide, ZrO2, has very good tribological properties, such as high wear resistance and a low friction coefficient. Other characteristics include excellent fracture toughness, low heat conductivity and high corrosion resistance. Zirconium oxide is for example used in medical applications.
